My short answer: YES, apart from some very few exaggerated coincidences.
There are people out there who think that what Bollywood shows “is just a movie” and doesn’t relate to real life at all. (Well, then I’m wondering what American Science-fiction movies or action movies are, in which you see aliens, monsters, wars etc.)
But can someone tell me what does not relate to real life in Bollywood?
- Parents who initially wanted to adopt a child but after seeing that the child can’t walk properly, change suddenly their opinion because they prefer a normal child? - A loving man who doesn’t express his love to his girlfriend and is forced to see that someone else was quicker in doing so and thus, lost her? - Children who seem too busy and bothered to take care of their parents when they grow older. Instead of appreciating them for how they have been raised they ask you: “What did you do for me/us in the end”? - People who express racial thoughts and think their nationality is above others? - People put money and success ahead of family life? - Young guys who don’t take responsibility once they set up their family? - A couple whose marriage doesn’t work anymore and one partner decides to walk away with someone else by cheating on the spouse? - People who don’t have any manners? - People who really love each other even after 20 years of marriage? - Kids that are being kidnapped? - People who want to commit suicide because they have been disappointed from their loved one? - A considerably older man who falls in love with a considerable younger woman? - A hospital who is trafficking with organs? - People who commit fraud and take advantage of other people? - People who disrespect other employees just because they are at the bottom of the corporate hierarchical structure? - Parents who think career is more important and neglect their own children. - Parents who are so proud of the bright kid, but feel embarrassed with their dyslexic child? - People who put tradition first (e.g. remarriage) and life second not realizing that life can become miserable by just trying to please other relatives.
These are just some examples from topics shown in these movies…… there would be many more….. I just want to say that all these stories relate very much to today’s world. Okay, I admit some things might be a bit too much of a coincidence and in real life there is not always a “happy end” but nobody can say that it’s all just fantasy because that’s not true. If everything would be just invented and Bollywood wouldn’t teach me anything I’m sure that I would not watch it. I love it because after watching every movie I know that I’m learning something, sometimes more sometimes less, but A MESSAGE IS ALWAYS THERE. But it would be nice if movies would also raise other problems the country itself has, such as poverty, forced marriages, caste systems, disabled people, child labour etc. issues which in India still exist.
